Eligibility is now limited to individuals who can demonstrate a direct ancestral link to Italy through a parent or grandparent born in Italy. Applicants must also prove a genuine and recent connection to Italy, such as recent residence or direct family ties. This change aims to ensure applicants have an "effective bond" (vincolo effettivo) with the country.
Yes. The new decree restricts automatic citizenship by descent to two generations: applicants must have at least one parent or grandparent born in Italy. Descendants beyond this lineage, such as great-grandchildren, are no longer automatically eligible.
Birth, marriage, and death certificates for all ancestors in the direct line, plus proof of the Italian ancestor’s naturalization status. Documents must be apostilled and translated into Italian.
Yes, provided the ancestor naturalized after the birth of their child.
As little as 6 months for those applying in Italy, and 12-24 months for those applying abroad, depending on the complexity of the case and the availability of the necessary documentation.
Yes, if they fall within the second-generation limit.
No language requirement exists for citizenship by descent.
